Private copy remuneration

Under Czech law, everyone is allowed to make personal copies of sound recordings or audiovisual works for private use. This means you can legally record part of a broadcast or an online video, copy or download a movie to your computer, etc. However, because this practice conflicts with the interests of rightsholders, there is a system of statutory compensation for making private copies.

This system requires manufacturers and importers of devices and media that can be used for making such copies to pay a compensation fee, the amount of which is set by law. Since the obligation and the fee amount are legally defined, no licensing contract is necessary.

Compensation is paid by manufacturers or importers of the following products:
Storage Media
  • Memory cards

  • Hard drives – both magnetic (HDD) and solid-state (SSD), external and internal

  • USB flash drives

  • Blank optical discs (CD, DVD, BD)

Devices
  • Tablets

  • Smartphones

  • Notebooks

  • Assembled desktop PCs

  • CD/DVD writers, external and internal

  • Radios with recording functionality

  • TVs with recording functionality
